In 1998 S.A.Marionetas - Teatro e Bonecos organized in the city of Alcobaça the first edition of the festival "Marionetas na Cidade". This event was the end result of a series of shows done by the company in that year. It was the purpose of the company then, as still is today, to promote the art of puppetry in its multitude of forms and techniques. This was achieved by the inclusion in the festival's program of puppet shows, an exhibition about puppetry and street performances. The ultimate purpose being, to allow a culturally deprived population the access to this relatively unknown form of theatre, as well as offering a perspective of Portuguese puppeteering in general.
One of the fundamental guidelines of the festival is the promotion of artistic creativity and new aesthetic approaches to puppetry, presenting shows both technically and aesthetically innovative, as well as organizing parallel activities such as workshops, street performances and shows for children, thus allowing a greater closeness to the public. Another fundamental guideline to the festival is preserving and recuperating traditional forms of puppeteering by presenting a specific programming that included Teatro D. Roberto  and Bonecos de Santo Aleixo, both representing traditional Portuguese popular puppet theatre.
In the following year, 1999, the acquired experience as well as the pursuit of the ideal format, led to a second edition that was ten days long, with a specific programming for local schools, including six shows, a debate about "Puppetry in Portugal", one exhibition of local plastic artists on the subject, one exhibition displaying ancient puppets belonging to Manuel Rosado (one of the popular puppeteers that during the first half of the 20th century performed the tradicional "D. Roberto" show), street performances, six shows open to the public in general, and the First Meeting of D. Roberto Performers. In 2000 the search for the ideal format continues as the duration of the festival was reduced to four days. This format would reveal itself as the best one and eventually be adopted in future editions, suffering only minor adjustments. The 2000 edition was organized in partnership with the Alcobaça Music Academy (Academia de Música da Banda de Alcobaça) and the City Hall (Câmara Municipal de Alcobaça). The program included four shows on the schools specific program, four shows for the public in general and several D.Roberto (street) performances.
In 2001 the festival had six shows on the school program, D. Roberto street performances, two workshops on puppet construction and three shows for the public in general. In 2002 the festival program suffered some changes due to financial problems but its realization was still taken forward for the fifth year in a row. The specific school program had four shows and was enlarged to include two workshops for children,  the "regular" program included D. Roberto street performances, two workshops and two shows for the public in general.
In 2003, the sixth edition of "Marionetas na Cidade" program's included four shows in the specific schools program, four shows for the general public, street performances of D. Roberto Theatre and two workshops on puppet building also open to the public in general.
In 2004, the 7th edition of the festival included 16 shows, one workshop on puppet construction and an exhibition displaying the puppet collection of traditional puppeteer Cesário Nunes , kindly given to S.A.Marionetas by local teacher Lúcia Serralheiro, also present and performing in the program item "Dom Roberto invites" was the English company  "Clive Chandler - Punch & Judy Show".
In 2005, the 8th included 8 shows performed all over the city, a month long (October) movie program, dedicated to puppetry, in a co-production with "7ª às 5ª".
The nationwide premiere of the movie "STRINGS" by Andres Ronnow-Klarlund was made possible due to another co-production, this time with company LNK-audiovisuais . The festival programming also included a workshop  on puppet construction, also present and performing in the program item "Dom Roberto invites" was the French company  "Théàtre Pas Sage" with the show  Polichinelle as well as puppeteer  Alexandre Pring from Brasil with his "Marieta".
