Portuguese Tuba Player and Yamaha Artist
Sérgio Carolino started his tuba studies at the early age of 11 in
Lisbon’s Conservatory and continued his formation in the prestigious
Superior Conservatory of Geneva (Switzerland) with Pierre Pilloud
(principal tuba in the Suisse Romande Orchestra) and also Kurt
Sturzenegger’s Chamber Music Class. Sérgio Carolino attended several Master Classes also with the most acknowledged Masters like Roger Bobo, Michel Godard, Pia Bücher, Philippe Legris, David Taylor, Æystein Baadsvik, Thierry Thibault, Mel Culbertson, Anne-Jelle Visser, Walter Hilgers, Enrique Crespo, Gene Pokorny and Harvey Philips. |

His broad and accurate curiosity led him to pursue different ways of musical expression, ranging from the typical classical repertoire to the ways of pure jazz and improvised music, therefore establishing himself as a virtuoso performer of both standard and contemporary repertoire for tuba. |

As principal tuba, he played in such different orchestras as Lisbon Metropolitan (1997-2001), Portuguese Symphonic, Gulbênkian, Remix-Ensemble and several Youth Orchestras standing out the Portuguese Youth Orchestra and European Youth Wind Orchestra. |

He is a member of several different formations such as Dixieland’s “Estardalhaço da Geringonça” (gadget ’s fuss) with one CD called “ Old Tradition, New Ignition”, “TGB” Jazz trio alongside Mário Delgado (Guitar) and Alex Frazão (Drums) and a Trio with Bernardo Sassetti (Piano) and Jean-François Lézé (Marimba) and Carlos Barretto Quartet. |

Sérgio has appeared as a featured soloist not only in Portugal but also in France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Finland. |

| He is constantly on the move as a Yamaha Artist giving Master Classes and Recitals all over Europe in places like “Real Conservatorio Superior de Madrid”, “Zürich Höchschule für Musik”, “2003 Vigo International Tuba Festival”, “Lieksa Brass Week” in Finland, the “International Brass Master Class” in Quimper (France). In 2004 he will be at the ”Royal Northern College of Music” (Manchester), the “36º International Horn Symposium” (Valencia) and the “International Tuba Euphonium Conference” in Budapest (Hungary). | |

Sérgio Carolino is now preparing his first solo recording consisting of original works by Portuguese composers like Carlos Azevedo, Pedro Moreira, Bernardo Sassetti, António Victorino D’ Almeida, Paulo Perfeito, Jean-François Lèzè, Tomás Pimentel, Eurico Carrapatoso, Mário Laginha, Luís Tinoco and Carlos Marques. |

He teaches Tuba and Chamber Music in the National Superior Orchestral Academy (Lisbon) and is the principal tuba in Oporto National Orchestra. |
